When I was seven years old, my family and I moved to Westow, a quaint little village nestled near Kirkham Priory, once again within the peaceful surroundings of the Howardian Hills. Life there was quiet and close to nature, with winding country lanes and historic ruins just a short walk away. Two years later, we relocated to the City of York due to my father’s work — a big change from the rural calm of village life. The move introduced me to a new world of history, architecture, and city energy, yet I never lost my fondness for the countryside I’d grown up in.

I was raised in a charming North Yorkshire village called Hovingham, best known for Hovingham Hall, the historic residence of the Duchess of Kent. My childhood home was a cosy cottage once known as Quarry Farmhouse, a place filled with character and countryside charm, though it has since been renamed. Hovingham was a truly beautiful place to grow up — a village built from warm, creamy sandstone that seemed to glow in the evening light. Surrounded by the rolling landscapes of the Howardian Hills, it offered endless fields, winding lanes, and a sense of peace that shaped much of who I am today. Life there moved at a gentle pace, steeped in tradition and the timeless beauty of rural Yorkshire.
