Goathland is one of the North York Moors’ most iconic villages, known for its traditional charm, dramatic landscapes, and connections to TV and railway history. Surrounded by sweeping heather moorland and peaceful valleys, the village offers visitors a blend of natural beauty and classic Yorkshire character. From its heritage railway station on the NYMR to its network of scenic walking routes, Goathland is a perfect base for exploring the national park, spotting wildlife, and enjoying a slower pace of life in the heart of the moors.
Exploring Mallyan Spout Waterfall
Mallyan Spout, just a short walk from Goathland, is one of Yorkshire’s most impressive waterfalls and a highlight for anyone visiting the area. Tucked within the tranquil woodland of West Beck, the waterfall plunges around 70 feet into a rocky gorge, creating a dramatic yet peaceful place to explore. The route to Mallyan Spout offers a mix of woodland paths, riverside walking, and atmospheric scenery, making it a must-see stop for hikers, photographers, and nature lovers. Together, Goathland and Mallyan Spout offer one of the most rewarding outdoor experiences in the North York Moors.

1. Start Goathland Village Shops
At Goathland’s village shops that you may recognise from Heartbeat, we want to take the sharp left bend at the war memorial.
If you have a dog with you keep him or her on a leash as there are sheep roaming the village and surrounding countryside.

2. Mallyan Spout Hotel
Keep following the path until you reach St Mary’s Church on the left and Mallyan Spout Hotel on the right.
Beside Mallyan Spout Hotel you will see the public right of way to Mallyan Spout Waterfall.

3. Follow the descent down to West Beck
The new improved path makes it much more easier to follow the hill down to West Beck. This is why it works best to perform this circular walk clockwise so that you don’t have to walk up this ascent!

4. At West Beck
When you reach West Beck at the foot of the descent, follow the signpost left for Mallyan Spout.
If you are unable to manage the rocks to see Mallyan Spout, turn right instead.

5. Mallyan Spout Waterfall
After negotiating the rocks carefully, you will find a sharp bend in West Beck with Mallyan Spout to the left of it.
The waterfall is more spectacular after heavy rainfall the previous day. You can occasionally see a rainbow at the foot of the waterfall when it is sunny.

6. Walk back to the Signpost
After viewing the waterfall that is 60ft in height, you can walk back to the signpost at the foot of the descent. At the signpost, walk straight on instead of back up the hill. This takes you across a boarded walkway.

7. Follow the Path
Keep following the path with West Beck to the left that becomes quite a deep ravine. On the right, you will can now take in views of the North York Moors as well as lush fields featuring plenty of sheep.

8. Steps Down
As you walk along taking in the scenery, you will eventually come to some steps down hill. Please take care at this point particularly in wet wintery weather.
Pass through the gate at the bottom.

9. Incline Cottage
The path will take you to a junction as well as a former railwayman’s cottage. Taking the path left takes you to Grosmont. You can also visit Beck Hole here too where there is a path to Thomason Foss Waterfall. You will find this at the opposite side of a stone bridge next to the pub.
However, for our walk today, we are going to take the gradual ascent right. This is part of the rail trail from Grosmont to Goathland.

10. Woodland
The path takes you through some woodland with a very narrow watercourse on your right hand side.
The ascent is much less of a struggle than the ascent at Mallyan Spout hence why we recommend doing this walk clockwise. There are benches to sit and rest if necessary.

11. Crossroads
You will eventually reach a gate and a road. If you take the road right, it takes you directly to the village shops. If you cross the road and go through the gate opposite, this will take you to the public toilets and car park.

12. Finish at Goathland
You can complete your walk at Goathland where there are eateries and and public house if you desire to finish your walk in one of these!
