Circular Walk from Goathland – Discover the Heart of the North York Moors

Discover Goathland, a charming Yorkshire village in the North York Moors. Famous for its heritage railway, scenic walks, and traditional charm, Goathland is the perfect destination for countryside explorers and TV history fans alike.

1. Start The Goathland Hotel

The Goathland Hotel (Aidensfield Arms) can be found at the between the main car parks and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

On the right hand side of the building, you will see a public right of way. This is part of the original George Stephenson route and is a straight track through to Moorgate.

2. Sadler House

After passing by the camp site you will eventually come to a gate with Sadler House on your left hand side.

Also on the left hand side you will notice that you are getting closer to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

3. Turn Left at the White Gate.

You will eventually arrive at Moorgate and here we go through the large white farmers gate and we turn left downhill.

4. Cattle Arch and Bridges

You will notice the Cattle Arch in the railway embankments of the original route of the railway. Heading further downhill, you will go underneath the current track of the heritage railway.

In quick succession, you will cross over a beck in the form of a stone bridge.

5. Birchwood Farm

After you have crossed the bridge, you will see a sign for Birchwood Farm. You will also notice a memorial on the opposite side of the drive.

Follow the drive towards Birchwood Farm across the open moors.

6. Walk to the Right of the Farm

Keep following the track to the farm taking in the spectacular views across the moors. At the farm, follow the way markers around the right hand side of the farm.

7. Follow the Path Downhill

Keep following the trail downhill until you reach a gate. At the other side of the gate is a narrow beck that is not very deep. On the right are some stepping stones you can use, but sometimes they are typically not needed.

8. Head Uphill to Partridge Hill Farm

After crossing the stepping stones if the beck is flowing, follow the track up the hill with Partridge Hill Farm on the left. The track takes you beside the farm buildings.

Keep following the track taking in the stunning views at the brow of the hill.

9. Follow the Public Right of Way

Keep following the track all the way back to the main road that takes you through Goathland. You will see the steam trains upon the North Yorkshire Moors Railway on your left, and you will see a bench on your right.

10. Take the Public Right of Way on the Right

At the junction to the main road, head left downhill for a little while until you see a public right of way sign on your right. This path takes you above the railway and Goathland Station below on your left.

11. Goathland Station

You will notice a bench on your left and a route downhill. Take the route downhill and cross over the level crossing at the foot of the station.

12. Cross the Bridge

At the station, follow the road uphill over the bridge that spans Eller Beck. You will see the former Mill House on your right as well as the weir on the left.

13. Turn Right at the Junction

At the junction to the station, simply follow the road right uphill until you reach our starting point, Goathland Hotel on the left hand side of the road. Opposite you will see Scripps Garage and Funeral Services that is now a Gift Shop.
